Introduction The descriptions contain information regarding color, form, size and shape of the flower, growth pattern and habit of plant, probable mature height in feet, some leaf and foliage description and blooming season. In the list - (0) - Denotes the lowest temperature at which the variety is expected to survive outdoors. Actual damage will depend greatly upon the microclime of the specific location, the wind conditions, amount of snow and ice cover, humidity, etc. "Early, late, mid" - indicates the relative blooming period. The actual calendar period will depend upon your hardiness zone. E. mid, l.mid indicates further refinement of the "middle" blooming season. (S) - Denotes shade. Some azalea flowers have a tendency to fade or wash out in full sun. The varieties so noted should be planted in high shade or semi-shade to realize the full beauty of their color. (F) - Denotes forcing types. These are types suitable for the florist trade. Please note the hardiness ratings to determine suitability for outdoor plantings. Special thanks are extended to Clara Hager for supplying the original files used to produce the booklet. For descriptions of other varieties and for additional information on propagation, cultivation and disease control, "Azaleas" (1987) by Fred C. Galle (Timber Press) is recommended as a comprehensive reference.
